IFTA: how does automated fund raising work?

Question by Lauren H: how does automated fund raising work?
I got a phone call from FOP asking for donations. The voice sounded automated but seemed to respond appropriately to my responses! It even laughed when I laughed. I asked if it was a real person, it said yes, but it sounded totally fake, and when I responded in a way that wasn't really "normal" I guess, it paused for a second before answering. (as in, when it said "have a nice day" at the end, and I said "no", there was this pause, then it started to say something, then switched to something else.)

How does this stuff work?

Voice recognition software has come a long way, the programs are designed to distinguish characteristics in each response. After that it becomes like a choose your own adventure book, depending on what answer you provide you head down a different path. Eventually leading to the same end result, hopefully you giving them money or hanging up.

Either way it is cool software, and at least you can understand the voice rather than getting a call from an outsourcing center.
